From Queenstown we drove over the mountains through Haast Pass to the village of Haast on the west coast. From there we spent the next several days working our way northward up the west coast of New Zealand.
The coastline is very scenic with winding, sometimes steep, roads. Some of it is reminiscent of Highway 1 in California. At times Russ wished for more than three or four kilometers without having to be turning the steering wheel! The highway has many scenic turnoffs, many with hiking trails. Some of the hikes, as we learned, can be quite cardio workouts! The weather can also change quickly. Our hike to see Fox Glacier began with partly cloudy skies. At the end we were being hit with moderate rain and hail!
