We visited the Great Wall near Badaling, a short distance from Beijing. Our climb on the wall was at an unimproved section (at least in the last few hundred years). OAT arranged for a local person to "help" u on some of the more treacherous sections. There is an improved section at Badaling where most tourists groups go. Some of our group did part of this area also.
