The Temple of Kom Ombo, built during the Greco-Roman period (332 BCE - 395 CE) is about 28 miles down river from Aswan. The temple is very unusual because it was dedicated to two deities, each with their own chambers and sanctuaries.
Edfu is about 65 miles north of Aswan. Our stop here was to see the Temple of Horus. Its construction began in 237 BCE but was not finished until 180 years later. We traveled through Edfu to get to the temple via horse drawn carriages which was interesting mixing with local pedestrians and tour buses.
After docking at Luxor our first visit was to the Luxor Temple. This temple is unusual in that it does not face the river, instead its main axis faces Karnak. The remains of a 3 km long avenue of Sphinxes leads the way to Karnak. The earliest parts of the temple date from the 14th century BCE.
The Temple of Karnak at Luxor is actually a complex of temples. It is the largest temple complex in the world (~500 acres). The great temple area at the heart of Karnak could hold St. Peter’s, Milan’s and Notre Dame Cathedrals! The earliest part was built around 1950 BCE.
