Our trip continued by train from Bath to London which we toured for the next three days. Having been here before we concentrated on seeing things we had not done previously. The weekend was a bank holiday in addition to the schools being on a break. The combination added to the usual crowds in London. We had planned to visit Greenwich which also gave us a slight break from the London tourists.
The short trip to Greenwich via boat on the Thames was a perfect way to see some of the many bridges as well as local architecture. For us the main interest in Greenwich was its significance as the location of the Prime Meridan (0 degrees longitude) and the source of the time signal used for international standards. The Royal Observatory is on a hill overlooking the Old Royal Naval College, Queen’s House and National Maritime Museum.
A tour of Shakespear’s Globe theater was informative and attending an evening performance was fun. Shortly before the performance when the rains came we were glad we had seats under cover!
Some insights into the conduct of the British part of WW II from Churchill’s underground war rooms was quite interesting. Completely living underground, as some of the staff did, would be a challenge.
