After our two weeks of exploring Umbrian hill towns we drove to La Spezia, dropped our car at the local Avis office, then took the train to Vernazza, our home for the next three nights. Vernazza is one of the five towns that make up the Cinque Terre.
One of the highlights of the Cinque Terre is to hike between the towns. We hiked from Vernazza to Riomaggiore. The trail goes through woods, olive groves and along steep hillsides as it winds through Corniglia and Manarola. In 2002 we hiked this same trail from south to north. Our last stop before flying home was Milan. This was just part of an afternoon since we had an early run to the airport the next morning. We toured the fashion district where Barb and Beth window shopped (only!). See our Italy 2002 trip for more photos of Milan.
