An excursion we did from Rome was to Tivoli. This entails a combination of metro and bus rides but is an opportunity to see some of the countryside outside of Rome.
The major attraction to visit Tivoli is Villa d'Este. It is an estate built by Cardinal Ippolito d'Este about 1550. There is a fanciful residetial palace but more of interest, we thought, was the gardens. The Aniene River was routed and divided to power hundreds of fountains in the gardens. Today, most of the fountains have been restored. With the exception of the two highest jets, all of the fountains operate from natural hydraulic pressure from the river.
While in Tivoli, we enjoyed lunch at a restaurant that we had been to on a previous trip.
