One set of photos deserve comments. In the autumn the cows are brought down from the high pastures where they have been for the summer. This movement of the cows has led to cow parades and frequent associated celebrations. At some of these parades the cows are decorated with flowered collars and large bells. Included here are examples of two cow parades we encountered. The one in Lauterbrunnen was a plain one where the cows came into town, went into a parking lot and were loaded onto trailers. The other one surprised us. We had just come out of a grocery store in Meiringen when we heard the distinctive loud bells of a cow parade. They came down a main road to a pasture at the edge of town. As can be seen, the parade is traditionally led by young people. Also, note that the cows are not tied together yet walk peacefully along.
