Madrid was the final stop on this European trip. There were several good reasons to go here. After two tours back to back we wanted some relaxing time and did not want to launch immediately on a 30+ hour trip back home. Russ’s birthday was the day after we ended our Portugal tour and he really wanted to add to his list of countries where he has celebrated his birthday. We had been to Madrid several years ago and always thought we would return. Russ has a second cousin who lives in Madrid and we have been telling him we would return for another visit. This all added up to an easy decision!
We toured the Royal Palace. With 2800 rooms covering almost 1.5 million square feet, it qualifies as Europe’s largest palace. Fortunately, you do not tour all 2800 rooms! The video on the changing of the guards may take a short time to load before you can view it.
At the suggestion of Russ’s cousin we visited the Sorolla Museum. This was a delightful museum housed in the painter Joaqujin Sorolla’s home. Photos inside the museum were not allowed but the gardens outside were.
We strolled, navigated the crowds, enjoyed afternoon drinks in a small plaza and had a great visit to Madrid. Our last night there we met Russ’s cousin’s family for pizza. Teen agers love pizza the world over!
