Tivoli was a Roman resort town about 30 km east of Rome. Other than a nice town the two main attractions here are Villa d’Este and Villa Adriana. Villa Adriana was Emperor Hadrian’s summer residence. We chose not to go there because we were pretty much “ruined” out by this time in our trip. Our visit to Tivoli was a beautiful day and Barb had planned on celebrating Russ’s birthday with a lunch there. We went the day before because of the weather forecast, still had a great lunch and toured Villa d’Este. The gardens at Villa d’Este are the most interesting feature with their fountains. The garden’s feature a multitude of fountains containing over 500 jets. These are all fed by hydraulic pressure, through a maze of tubes, largely from the partially diverted Aniene river.
