Mesa Verde National Park is a short drive from Durango. We stayed at the lodge in the park because of the lengthy drive from the park entrance to the ruins. It was interesting to return to a park we had camped in over 50 years before! Sites that we could freely visit then now require a somewhat pricey guided tour. Fortunately, most of the sites are close together except the Step House site in the Wetherill Mesa region. The park was not busy so stopping to see most sites was no problem.
