Bacharach is a picturesque village on the Rhine River whose origin daies back to about 1356. The steep hillsides surrounding the town are planted with vineyards. Tourism, in addition to winemaking, is the primary economic blood of the area. We could see the Rhine from our apartment and it became obvious why this river is so critical to German commerce. Very frequent trains, both passenger and freight, pass through traveling between Mainz and Koblenz.
The town is dominated from above by Burg Stahleck Castle which dates to the 12th century but has been a hostel since 1925. Our apartment, part of a private home, was a ten minute walk through town from the train station.
