Other than coming and leaving Germany we only traveled south of Bacharach to two towns, Rudesheim and Mainz. Mainz is a much larger modern city. We wandered to the old part but being oriented to the more quaint villages, we didn’t stay long.

Rudesheim is sort of a scenic but very touristy city. A major attraction at Rudesheim is the Niederwald Monument. This monument, 225 meters above  the Rhine River affords a very scenic view over the vineyards of the Rhine. The monument was constructed to commemorate the founding of the German Empire in 1871 after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. The first stone was laid on 16 September 1871 by Kaiser Wilhelm I. Various scenes on the monument represent different aspects of a unified German empire, some of which was more PR than reality at the time.
