After a brief visit to Bayonne, the capital of the French Basque region, we departed for Pamplona Spain.

Enroute we stopped at the French town, St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, which is the traditional starting point for hiking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. From here the Camino trail crosses the Pyrenees mountains into Spain.

That day they were having the Race for the Cure run. It was particularly interesting in that the women were entering the main street from many tributary streets. What at first appeared to be only a few participants quickly became a very large crowd!

Another stop before reaching Pamplona was in Roncesvalles, the location of the battle where Roland, a major military leader under Charlemagne, was killed in 778.
