Big Bend National Park - 2019

Big Bend National Park is one of the most remote national parks in the continental US. It is about 800,000 acres. It encompasses the entire Chisos mountain range and a large swath of the Chihuahuan Desert. It shares 118 miles of border with Mexico. Primary activity in the park, other than sight-seeing, is hiking, camping, canoeing and wildlife/bird watching. It also is a favorite location for night sky viewing as it is noted as a “dark sky” location.

Lodging in the park is limited. The town of  Terlingua, including an adjacent “Ghost Town” has accommodations. Otherwise, lodging is an hour’s drive from the park! We were able to get very attractive lodging in the Terlingua/Ghost Town area.

Our three days here were filled with an all day canoe trip on the Rio Grande, scenic drives and several short hikes.
