We had a short flight from Cairo to Aswan. Aswan is home to the old and new (high) dams that have helped control Nile flooding and created Lake Nasser. The Philae Temple complex was moved to Agilkia (Philae) Island to preserve it when the high dam was built. We visited the Nubian Museum in Aswan. The native Nubian villages were all submerged by Lake Nasser.
For an interesting outing we sailed in a felucca across the Nile to the Aswan Botanical Garden on Kitchener’s Island. The felucca has fin-like sails and was used by the ancient Egyptian builders to ferry heavy objects across the Nile. The botanical gardens was built by Lord Kitchener in the 1890s and contains plantings imported from many countries.
