Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recently voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the world, is the legacy of the Nabateans, an industrious Arab people who settled in south Jordan more than 2000 years ago. The area is full of elaborate structures carved in the stone believed to have been created about 100 BCE. There are only a few free standing structures. One of the attractions is the approach through a one km long narrow gorge (the “siq”) to get to the city itself.
