Our first full day in Egypt launched with a trip to Saqqara, about 16 miles south of Cairo. This is the necropolis of Memphis, where the Old Kingdom pharaohs who ruled starting about 3100 BCE, were buried. It is best known for the Step Pyramid, believed to be the oldest of Egypt’s 97 pyramids. Most of the kings of the 1st and 2nd Dynasties were buried here.

Our next stop was the signature attraction in Egypt; the Pyramids of Giza. We did not realize that these are just outside of Cairo. The famous Sphinx is also located on the Giza plateau.
