Our tour began in Reims, the site of the cathedral, began in 1211, and the site of the crowning of 26 French kings. We were fortunate to be there when they had a sound and light show. We only put up three example photos of the cathedral during the light show but it was quite impressive. From Reims, we traveled to Colmar via Verdun where we visited the WW I battlefield. The landscape still shows the devastation from that terrible time.
Colmar is a picturesque town with a very German appearance, not surprising since this area had been part of both France and Germany at various times in history. It is the home of the sculptor Bartholdi, creator of our Statue of Liberty. It is also home to The Isenheim Alterpiece, a series of paintings that are in a hinged arrangement to change the scene.
In this region we visited the village of Kayserberg, a winery tour and the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg.
