Castro
Castro, dating to 1567, is Chile’s third oldest city in continuous existence. Walking to the town center from the dock was an exercise because of the steep grade.
The church of San Francisco is unique in that the interior is constructed of wood from the area and built by local carpenters. The wood sculptures lining a steep commercial street were fascinating. Another famous part of the city are the palafitos, traditional wooden houses built on stilts.
