In May 2024, along with our friends Roger and Phyllis Barry, we went on this twelve day journey along the Norwegian coast. It was on the Norwegian company Hurtigruten’s ferry that has been operating this route since 1893. In the 2500 nautical mile round trip between Bergen and Kirkenes the ship visits 34 coastal communities. The jet stream runs along this coast so the water stays open allowing year round operation. We did the round trip so some stops are in the middle of the night one direction and mid day on the reverse direction. Most stops are 15-30 minutes and a few are several hours which allows time to get off and explore the town. At each stop they load and unload cargo, sometimes cars and frequently passengers. The majority of the passengers have cabins but some are only on board a few stops and you can find them sleeping in the lounge areas.

This map depicts the route, which crosses the Arctic Circle south of Bodo, and the red dots the stops. Because of the time of year we had no sunset for about a week!

The photo pages are arranged from south to north. Since we covered the same route both directions some differences in the sky can be seen in photos of the same location. The main attraction on this trip was the scenery. Scenery photos can start looking alike so we have tried to only show a sampling. Note that captions of many town names do not have the correct Norwegian alphabet letters. It was simpler to stick to standard English equivalent letters.

On each page of photos, if you click your mouse cursor on a photo, a larger image will be displayed. You can then sequence through the photos using the navigation arrows on each side of your screen. Also a small circle icon at the top right of that window will start and stop a slideshow of the photos. The “X” at the top right of that screen will exit back to the original window. The slideshow timing is set for 5 seconds for each photo.
