Aareschlucht
Reichenbach Falls
After it leaves the Alps on its way to the Rhine, the Aare River cuts a cleft through a hill between Innertkirchen and Meiringen. The west end of the canyon is within easy walking distance of Meiringen. We chose to walk both directions through the canyon. Some of the views are quite different when seen both directions. One very interesting, almost hidden, feature are two entrances to a cavern facility from WW II. This cavern was eqipped to house 185 soldiers and their equipment. Apparently it was never used and lay hidden, for many years.
From Aareschlucht we walked to another notable site just outside Meiringen, Reichenbach Falls. For those not familiar, this was the site of the demise of Sherlock Holmes. A funicular takes you up to the lower falls. From there you can climb to higher, but less specular, sections of the falls.
