The hike between Mannlichen and Kleine Scheidegg, affectionatetly known as the grandmother’s walk, is the opposite side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley from the grandfather’s walk. At 7300 feet ASL, this side is about 2400 feet higher. Neither hike has a significant altitude variation. For this hike we traveled to Wengen, then via cable car to Mannlichen.

The day we were here there was a moderate wind blowing which attracted some paragliders. It was interesting to watch them strap onto their glider, run a few steps and launch. We could see their destination far below us in the valley.

We had picked up some sandwiches in Wengen so had a picnic lunch beside the path while taking in the scenery. From Kleine Scheidegg we returned to Wengen via train then home.

Another day we went on a boat trip on Lake Thun from Interlaken to the city of Thun. The boat makes stops at towns along both sides of Lake Thun which makes for a leisurely sight seeing day as opposed to hiking. The Aare river runs through Thun. At one dam they use the control gates to create a surfing area. Several surfers were using the rapids created. Thun deserves a day but we were putting as much as possible into our days while Leslie was with us. We returned to Meiringen via train through Interlaken.
