We spent a big part of one day at the archeological site at Ostia Antiqua. This ancient Roman city, founded in the 4th century BC, is about a 45 minute metro/train ride out of Rome. Unlike Pompeii, this was a working class port city of about 60,000 people. It was abandon and gradually filled in with silt from the River Tiber up to the second floor level of the buildings. Being covered protected the ruins from being raided for building materials like so many sites. The complex is large with many streets to wander through. Most of the sites were identified but those don’t have much meaning when viewing pictures, hence I don’t have most of these photos identified as to the structure.
