We were in four bush camps, three nights each, during our safari. These proved to be one of the major surprises and not what we had envisioned. Water was solar heated and electricity was from solar cell charged batteries They were truly in the bush and rustic, but we didn’t suffer!
The camps were: Baobab Lodge, Chobe N.P., Botswana; Wilderness Tented Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana; Lufupa Camp, Kafue N.P., Zambia; Kashawe Camp, Hwange N.P., Zimbabwe
At the initial arrival at a camp, the staff greeted us with songs. Subsequent arrivals were always greeted with damp towels to wipe off dusty faces and hands. Evening meals were buffet style with elegant table settings with the chef announcing the menu. A highlight of meals was having several members of camp staff eating with us where interesting conversations always occurred.
These camps are open and local animals wandering was not uncommon, especially at night. We had to be accompanied by camp staff when going to our tent cabin after dark.
Everyday about mid afternoon, there was a talk by camp staff on some aspect of that country’s situation, camp staff life, local culture or environmental issues. These always proved to be educational.
On the last night at each camp, the staff entertained us with song and dance and we were expected to reciprocate. Our part was somewhat lame in comparison to the staff’s, but they seemed to enjoy our attempts anyway.
