We returned to Johannesburg to explore. We found the J’Burg Gautrain to be a clean and  efficient transportation in from the airport as well as to local destinations. We had engaged a tour firm to drive the four of us to the Cradle of Humankind museum and Sterkfontein caves. This area is where some of the oldest human remains have been discovered. This day trip proved to be an interesting view of our early ancestors and their evolvement.

We again found the local hop on hop off bus to be an excellent means to tour the city. An optional extension for the bus was a tour of the township of Soweto. There were a small group in a minivan for this. Not unlike our township visit in Cape Town, we observed that the townships still have a range of housing from deplorable to modest.

A visit to the Apartheid Museum was a sobering experience. It was disturbing that some ot the rhetoric that justified apartheid is again being heard today!

We found Johannesburg, in spite of being the main commercial center for South Africa, to be a much less pleasant city to visit than Cape Town.
