Southwest US 2021

At the end of October we embarked on a totally different adventure. We rode the Amtrak California Zephyr train from Chicago to Grand Junction, Colorado, in the comfort of a roomette sleeping compartment. This was about a 27 hour trip, leaving Chicago mid afternoon and arriving in Grand Junction late afternoon the following day. The map below, courtesy of Amtrak, depicts the route and stops.

From Grand Junction we visited Durango, CO., Mesa Verde, Arches and Canyonlands National Parks via a rental car. After the week of site seeing we drove back to Grand Junction where we returned to Chicago on the California Zephyr overnight train. For our visits to Arches and Canyonlands we based in Monticello, UT. The second map below illustrates the driving part of the trip. That map is a bit misleading in that one has to get to the northern part of Canyonlands through Moab, UT., which meant extra driving the day we visited that part of the park.
