Canyonlands National Park is large and much different from Arches Park. Instead of the rock formations of Arches, Canyonlands has vast vistas. It has three disctinct sections. They are named "Island in The Sky”, "The Needles", and “The Maze”. The Island in The Sky is the most scenic and the most visited. One could think of the Island in the Sky as looking down on the rock formations whereas The Needles area is looking up at those formations. The Maze is the most remote and requires four wheel drive, high clearance vehicles to visit.
Our major hike here was at Grand View Point, a two mile scenic hike. The Needles section has a lot of backcountry hiking and camping, but not the road driving scenery that the northern region has. The Needles visitor center is 25 miles from the park entrance!
