For our first full day in Switzerland we thought it prudent to stay close to “home” and do some local activities. Two ventures are within walking distance just outside Meiringen. These are Reichenbach Falls and Aareschlucht.

Reichenbach Falls is where Arthur Conan Doyle sent Sherlock Holmes to a premature demise. A funicular takes one to the base of the falls. From there you can climb several groups of steps to a succession of falls segments. The falls also provides an excellent view of our home town of Meiringen.

After leaving the Alps on its way to the Rhine the Aare River has cut a gorge through a hill between Innertkirchen and Meiringen,  (Aareschlucht). There is a small rail line that runs between the two towns so you only have to walk one way through the gorge if you chose. The gorge is wide at the east end and becomes progressively narrower at the exit on the west end closest to Meiringen where we chose to start.
