In October 2019 we flew to Biaritz France then bused to Bayonne France to join a Rick Steves tour of the Basque region of Spain and France. This was the shortest tour we have done, only 9 days, and it covered a quite small distance as the map above depicts (map courtesy of Rick Steves). Our overnight stays were: Bayonne France, Pamplona Spain, San Sebastian Spain and Bilbao Spain. This entire region is encompassed in the Basque area. We learned about a culture that predates much of modern day Europe. The Basque language, Euskara, is still spoken today making it likely one of the oldest European languages still spoken. Our mastery of some of the words was a miserable failure! Part of this trip encompassed the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route across northern Spain to Santiago de Compostela.
