In October 2019 we followed our Rick Steves Basque tour with the Rick Steves Heart of Portugal tour. We had a couple of days in Lisbon before our tour after our flight from Bilbao Spain to Lisbon. Other than doing a bit of relaxing in Lisbon we made a day trip to nearby Sintra before joining the tour group. The map above (courtesy of Rick Steve’s Portugal book map) depicts the basic route of our tour. Our overnight stays were: Lisbon, Evora, Obidos, Coimbra, Pinhao and Porto. Portugal is about the size of the state of Indiana so it really doesn’t require a lot of drive time. As we learned, it is a very hilly country and much of the walking made us glad we spend as much time as we do at our local fitness center! After the tour we flew from Porto to Madrid where we enjoyed some sightseeing. Having been to Madrid previously, we skipped the major museums and concentrated on a slow paced visit. Russ has a second cousin who resides in Madrid and we enjoyed meeting him and his family for dinner before flying home.
