Alaska Cruise - 2022

In June 2022 we, along with friends Roger and Phyllis Barry, joined a 13 day cruise along the Alaskan coastline between Seward Alaska and Vancouver British Columbia Canada with the Norwegian company Hurtigruten. Our ship was built in 2019, is 140 meters long, and uses electric propulsion for cruising which is designed to reduce CO2 emissions by 20% over conventional engines. We only had about 300 passengers although the ship is capable of about 500. A unique feature of this cruise was that we had an expedition crew of about thirty people dedicated to scientific experiments and educational lectures instead of the more traditional cruise entertainment. Many of our passengers were European residents. All ship announcements  were in both English and German. Lectures were in English and a translator provided the German through headphones for anyone wishing it. The lectures offered ranged from listening to the communications sounds of various whale species to climate change data to local history.

We flew to Anchorage a day before the cruise started where we had scheduled a three hour sightseeing flight to the Denali park region. The day was clear with calm winds which proved to be perfect for our flight in a small six passenger float plane.

The map below, courtesy of Hurtigruten, depicts our cruise route and stops.
